Day 365 — Cheers!

[for Monday, Dec. 31]

cheers — dec 31

Okay, so I got the issue all figured out. Turns out I had duplicated Day 318, so it's been off since then. As far as I know, I've gone back and renumbered everything since that day, so we should be kosher. I had some days in there that were just crazy off. Like, 224 instead of 324. Etc. Proof that you can blog in your sleep!

So this last photo — fittingly of a glass of wine, shared in the company of several friends on New Year's Eve — brings Project 365 to a close. I have actually had more fun than I thought I would, and I can't believe I made it without missing a single day. I love going back and looking through my daily pictures to see what was happening in my life at any given time. I'm proud of the collection as a whole. I think I'll get to hang on to more memories than I would have had I not collected a photo every day.

I had actually thought briefly about continuing through this year — Project 366, because it's a leap year — but things are crazy right now and I am so tired that I think I'll just cool it for a while. Maybe I'll get back to writing here more regularly in 2008. I used to write really long, meandering, personal posts about life and nature and politics and The Universe and lots of stuff most people probably don't care to read but that I remember really enjoying writing about. I don't do that very much anymore. Posting photos is a lot easier, and a lot less risky. But not nearly as cathartic.

So maybe I'll try my hand at it again.

This coming year could prove to be extremely interesting and extremely tough. There are changes on the horizon for me. I worry about how things will work out. I dread having to make Big Decisions. But I've got some hope stashed away. I'm trying to keep it pragmatic and not get too carried away with anticipation of the future. But it's there.

The good news is that life, even when it's hard, is still pretty good to me.

[for Sunday, Dec. 30]

octopus — dec 30

I know some people probably find tiny octopus terribly appetizing, but I for one find it more suitable to gross photography.

Off

Here I sit, trying to plug in my last two photos for Project 365, when I realize I'm a day off. I'm ending up with 364. Is this right? Then this project is horribly misnamed.

So off I go through the archives to see where I screwed up.

Day 362 — Toothbrush Shopping

[for Friday, Dec. 28]

toothbrush shopping — dec 28

Is there anything more obnoxious than modern toothbrush design?

YES. Modern shaving-razor design. It's too obnoxious to photograph. Women apparently shave with nymph-shaped muse-sticks and men shave with race cars. Bah.

Day 361 — Instincts

[for Thursday, Dec. 27]

instincts — dec 27

For the record, this is NOT one of my cats. (My cats can't kill anything except my patience. And silence, sweet silence.) This viciously cute little fluffball is a younger sibling to my cats, still residing with my parents. This is either Johnna, Paula, or Georgie (not sure, I can't tell them apart, and besides, one of them has been renamed "Connie" because, according to my mother, she has a contemplative look about her), who was tossing this poor dead cardinal around with reckless abandon when I came home from the mechanic's on Thursday morning.

Oh, speaking of mechanics. The car ended up needing a new spark plug and ignition coil. $83 for parts and labor. Not too shabby. She runs like a beaut now. Except for the loud-ass window-tape flapping that grows worse and worse as my ghetto window falls into the crack atop the door.

So I guess that's next on my list.

Day 360 — Whirlybird

[for Wednesday, Dec. 26]

whirlybird — dec 26

Not to be confused with this kind of Worleybird, the Savannah eatery owned by Darryl "Have You Forgotten" Worley, country music sortastar.

Phunny story about Darryl Worley*:

Phil was at the Savannah theater with his brother, watching I Am Legend, when some douchebag's phone rings.

Douchebag: Hello? ... [leans over to woman companion] We got any more of my CDs in the truck?

Douchebag accomplice: Naw, I don't thank so.

Douchebag: Sorry, man, I don't think we do. [hangs up] [to companion:] Someone's wantin' to buy one of mah CDs.

Project 365

*Originally Phil was totally confident about the identity of the douchebag in this story, until I made him repeat the story over and over to everyone I knew, at which point Phil began to add: "I think it was Darryl Worley." So it may not have been. I will have to consult the Gawker Stalker log to see for sure.

[for Sunday, Dec. 23

no idea what is happening in this photo — dec 23

The thing is, I was there and I was fully coherent and taking photographs. And yet I still have no idea.

Which is kind of awesome, I guess. As was Courtney's cheese log and Shane's cranberry punch. Mmmmm. I want some now.

Day 352 —Right Now

[for Tuesday, Dec. 18]

right now — dec 18

Let me tell you something about Chicago. What they've got there is the coldest cold I have ever felt. And I know that it gets so much colder. There and elsewhere in the world. Soooo much colder.

The wind is bad, yes, but even without it, the air will kick your ass without first bothering to learn your name. I was outside without gloves at around 8 p.m. Monday for about three minutes before I was like, "HOLY SHIT I NEED GLOVES, STAT!" My knuckles had turned the color of meaty red bruises and I could barely bend my fingers. Even inside my pockets, my hands weren't safe. I ducked into a Walgreens and bought some gloves and managed to stay outside for twenty more minutes before I gave in and went back inside and punched the thermostat up to 74.

It must be what being in space feels like.

Day 351 — Chicago

[for Monday, Dec. 17]

chicago — dec 17

Even though I felt like absolute crap all day (the sinus infection, she is taking her time to take hold but is already wreaking havoc on my head and my ears), Chicago managed to charm me enough to make me go outside — as underdressed as a lifelong Tennessean who owns no real winter coats can be at 8:30 at night to take photographs of its famed Magnificent Mile until I feared frostbite and had to return to the hotel room.

I need more time with you, Chicago. We'll meet again some day.
